DocVerse never made any sense to me. It's an Office add-on implementation of features that will soon ship with Office 2010. But I guess it's not such a silly product after all if google is willing to pay for it.

Is google a little scared of Office 2010. Seems they should be. Google Docs is for note taking at best, not serious business documents. Perhaps DocVerse functionality will make it more competitive.

Will this acquisition make it possible to finally insert a workable image into a spreadsheet on Google Docs?

I hope that they extend this functionality to iWork on the Mac. Apples own iWork online is nice, but GDocs will be much more universal. I welcome any plug in that allows me to easily save or upload my docs from iWork.

The web based collaboration is getting its way. It?s a good idea for plugging into the original app itself. Google Doc is a half way work since it is only a subset of MS Office. People more like and get used to the things they already are familiar with. Google Doc is not a MS Office, And Google can not re-invent every popular app other companies provide, such as MS Office, Photoshop, Auto Desk. So creating a less equivalent version of web based might not be a good practice even for a gaint company like Google.

Plugging to the original app is better solution, I think. Following the scenario, one company creates a web browser collaboration app so users can collaboratively watch youtube or hulu movies with each other. The link: http://www.toponode.com. It's the first youtube collaboration tool ever have

Forcing people to use your internet services by promoting the cloud as the next wave is not a responsible course of action. Google now reminds me of Microsoft in its heyday.

@Eugene as an author of OOo2GD I must admit that my OOo2GD is far behind DocVerse, DocVerse is powerful tool for collaboration where in the same time more than one person can work on document. Results of this collaboration may be uploaded to Google Docs.
OOo2GD gives you only possibility to upload your documents to Google Docs, without this whole "working on the same document in the same time" thing.
I hope I will be able to add some similar features in future, and maybe Google will bought also me ;p

when you look at the business processes you run in desktop software- especially Excel, you probably do not agree totally with "The future of productivity applications is in the cloud." How does the cloud work when you're offline. How do you mature your data and then share it-- there's a lot of what-if that needs to happen before you're ready to share your updates. In the near term, "data" should be in the cloud where appropriate- especially for forecasts and other planning processes. Companies like Boardwalktech are bridging the gap-- data in the cloud and processing on the desktop.

I too hope you'll add DocVerse support for OpenOffice (OOo) & not just on Linux! Yes, the largest user base is MS Office but, unless you start including better support for its competitors, it hampers those alternatives & makes it less likely they'll make as much headway in adoption. Imagine a world of Google Apps combined with FLOSS applications to compete against the MS machine! If Google can't replace the MS desktop apps with something else, it makes it harder to convince clients to move to Google & away from MS - especially since they'll have their own cloud offerings.
