Does the API enable sharing of contacts between Gmail and Google apps email accounts? I've been trying to sort that out for a while, and haven't found anything addressing it.

    Thx

It sure would be nice if when visiting the Contacts section of Gmail, ALL the domain users would be listed, along with their personal information like birthday, phone numbers, etc. For those of us who can't figure out how to use the APIs, it would be really easy for us if this could be managed through the control panel. Thanks!

Why is just an API available? What about small biz who either do not have the programming resources or the funds to create a GAL front end -- but just want to have a Global Address list?

The killer ap for me would be the ability to measure the Soical Network Nodes. Why arent there Tags in Gmail? You have labels, but the labels are personal and dont propigate in a network of connected individuals. Ideally, I would like to capture the Relationships of People over time.

So for example lets say you have a project. I would like to be able to measure the connectedness of people in the project before you start the project. During the project I would like to be able to understand those communication nodes, for example how is the sommunication flowing from contact to contact.

I would also like to be able to statistically analayze for potential problems. this would give insights into "motivattion". How can we measure motivation? I think an indirect measure would be the dynamic conections between contacts.

This is a big step in the right direction, enabling a global address list for a company as a service will be one more great selling point to convince big companies to migrate to Google apps.

    Nice work...

Big Deal! When are you going to add fully vCard data support, 3rd party sync (Plaxo, LinkedIn, Facebook), email distribution lists, alphabetical tabs ("A", "B", etc.) to jump through the address book, image drag-and-drop to attach to files, the ability to download/export a complete zipped filie of all Contacts in vCard format, etc. If Google treated Google Apps Calendar and Google Apps Contacts like it treats Gmail ... well, then you'd really have something to write about.

No programing... I hear that! Looks like I am off to Java school as if I have the time. Anyway, the official word is that there is a Java Lib so that will work as an abstraction layer and give functionallity to draw from a .csv file like the Shared Contacts API Python script.

Yeah I agree with everyone else, needing to program an API is un-google!

I'm the admin, and i badly want to move my business (30+) to Apps but i just can't until this contacts issues is sorted.

All I want is to be able to upload, one-time, 2000ish vCards that will then be visible, searchable and editable to everyone on my domain.

Surely this can't be that difficult google?! can it?

Not sure if I missed something but are we still not able to have separate first and last names in Google Contacts? Seems like it's just an adjunct to Email rather than a full-blown app like Docs, Email, and Calendar.

I'm confused. The shared contacts capability has always existed and is enabled in my domain but has never worked. Now Google claims it is a new feature... and it still doesn't work!

Why not let us edit this list via an excel file or something? any gmail user can export or import their contact list to multiple formats. Why not let domain admins use this same functionality??? IE....let us EXPORT the global address list with the headers to a CSV file or something and then we could add to that list any new contacts we want and then IMPORT it back in???

Also- need support for phone #s for each contact! Seriously...seems a little crazy to me that the only info the GAL can contain is name and e-mail?

If you have contact list sharing enabled and your users have multiple aliases/nicknames, they all show up as suggestions when you start to type in the To: field. These "automatic" contacts can't be edited via the API either .

    Hi,

Like to suggest an improvement to the Google Contacts.

Add a feature to add a record to any contact to save details about the last contact made with the contacts in the list similar to the feature provided in ACT software.

How in the world do you access a Google Apps users contact list through the API? Near as I can tell, it cannot be done at all. You get their Google Account of the same email names list, not their Apps contact list.

Google really needs to integrate the contacts better. The fact that every apps account has two wholly separate contacts lists is confusing to users.

Agree with all the above comments. Our company wants to use google apps badly but simply cannot unless we can adequate share, view and edit contacts for our 2000 contact database.
Google, can you at least tell us if something is on the way?

100% of email clients support LDAP for a global address list. Does this support LDAP or any directory server for that matter? That would be the easiest solution to allow the Global Address book to be useful for companies without developers.

Looks like the solutions marketplace will have a great opportunity to create a band-aid in the near term to fill this void. Share contacts across a domain is a huge issue for organisations right now on Google Apps, of any size.

At the same time, as a product manager I can't really blame Google, as they are wise to make the API first because there are so many 3rd party vendors who they can rely on to create more functionality than themselves at this stage (think CRMs, niche collaboration suites, social networks) They're just embracing the spirit of open.

Eventually I'd expect Google to create an OpenID and LDAP interface to expose itself as a directory for 3rd party applications. Then you can kiss Active Directory goodbye.

Not only do we need a simple way to share contact information between our users but we also need the ability to share EMAIL between users. This could be on a Global or preferably on a Contact by Contact basis. When I look at a contact, I need to see all of the correspondence with the contact, not just the correspondence I have had with the contact. This is the only effective way to manage a Contact/Client. A resource like Google would be the PERFECT place for it. All the data is already here. You just need to allow them to connect.

I know this is really a CRM functionality but isn't that the direction you are moving? If you are making this more business oriented, I think you should keep your eye on it. You can be the FIRST with this as nobody else does it simply and effectively with little or no overhead for us. I am certain that with a simple shared contacts and shared email along with the Shared Calendaring that already exists, people would flock to Google Apps.

Adding to many of the above, what my people need is a way to share groups as well as individual contacts. Centrally managed, by a non-admin user with rights to only managed / edit the global contacts list. And to be able to browse through it, not just pull up a drop down list. I really hope you are working on something like this, because everything else has been done so well in Apps, that I'd hate to see Contacts continue to lag behind in such a state.

I want to recommend Google Apps to our general manager as THE solution to our company's email, calendar & contact needs, but I can not recommend that we switch to it until the contact portion is as good as the rest. Please let me know if there are changes coming in the near future so I can recommend your product.

Jeez, Google really needs to focus some REAL google attention on this. I just converted my company to google apps and this lousy shared contact implimentation is KILLING us. I don't get it? Why didn't google just implement the same kind of system and sharing as Google Calendars? Would have been a killer feature and saved people a ton of grief! Why! Why! :(

Google Apps NEEEEED a shared contacts list where I can share (external) contacts with my colleagues. And then start building out simple CRM functionality around it. Log calls and contacts. Register and track business opportunities.. Then we can ditch Salesforce.com and use only google apps...

Just need to another PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE (with cream on top) to Google that re-states what's being begged for above:

    1. Global address book, accessible via the Google Apps dashboard.
    2. As Rob (Aug 2009) said: "When I look at a contact, I need to see all of the correspondence with the contact, not just the correspondence I have had with the contact".

This two features would by DYNAMITE for Google Apps. My company is being prevented from fully embracing Google Apps (and dumping our old, expensive CRM software on our LAN) until these two have been resolved.

    Please!?

Let me chime in here as well. I was 100% pumped about Google Apps, and not only ready to move my own company over to it, but also ready to be come a reseller of the product!

Only now, after doing more research do I come to find out that such a basic feature as a shared contact list is being ignored. What is really going on here?

I'm really glad my company decided to spend $15,000 upgrading Exchange and the rest of our Windows servers rather than me convincing them to switch to Google Apps unwittingly and then having to explain why there is no way to have a Global Contact list. Google, please at least recognize this need and tell us what you're doing to address it.

    Thanks,
    Fitz

Why is shared contacts for Google Apps users so difficult to create? I was hoping that clicking "Enable contact sharing" in the Admin control panel would be all it took, but it seems we have to look outside to 3rd-party solutions like Google Apps Marketplace, none of which appear to work yet. This is so frustrating! I could easily convince my company to migrate fully to Google Apps if this feature was added. Seems like a huge oversight for Google. I hope someone builds it soon!

I'm on the Tech Committee of a school moving towards Google Apps. I love the product, but omissions like this make the product seem immature in comparison to Exchange.

Yes, a Google Group can be created by users as a workaround, but what use is that if a member of the organization:
    a) can't look up the group in Google Contacts
    b) can't ascertain (from within Google Contacts) who the members of the group are

Thanks for Google Apps--I hope you'll prioritize this for a quick fix.

It's been 16 months since Google launch the new API and no real improvments have been made.
Google Apps won't be an exchange killer until such a simple feature (Global Address Book) works as it should.
I've just started to be a google apps official reseller for 2 months and I've already had to open around 10 support tickets to resolve issues and bugs on web interface and account management.
Sorry but Google Apps looks like a beta software, not a professional one.

Sharing Contacts with Google Apps is pain ....

Without a easy Interface to import csv or pst files as base for Global shared contacts google apps is not a real exchange killer.

I use the google apps inside my company but I would not recommand it to others as long this
contacts can only created over the api.

I also see no possible solution to sort my Contact by Lastname ...or even by Company Name.

There a few nice things but as said ... GLOABAL CONTACTS is feature that all users need.

I was actually shocked that there isn't support for global contact. Moronic, actually. That functionality should be a given in the business world. Unreal that Google hasn't done anything about it in two years. Just goes to show that large companies lose track and their ability to implement things quickly. Sad.
