Without Mac support, we will use box.net or other services.

Big fail on lack of Mac support.

"Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office is now available to all users worldwide", as long as they're not using Macs. Too bad. I suspect it will be the usual long wait for we Google Apps users who use Macs.

I have had a Google Apps standard account for a while now and just installed Cloud Connect. Synced a doc and it's not in my Google Docs for my domain, instead it looks like it is syncing to a new Google Docs account. Also no matter what link I click (Mail, Calendar...) I keep getting sent to pages that are attempting to have me sign up for a gmail account or a page that says "Oops. Another calendar has been created for...".

However if I go the old way (docs.mydomain.com) I get my old Google Docs again.

    What gives?

I am predominantly a Linux user but have to use Windows machines where I work. We have OpenOffice.org installed everywhere (as well as Microsoft Office).

Is there likely to be a CloudConnect for OpenOffice.org?

Wow! lots of negative feedback :-(

Do you all realize that this is meant for google's target for google apps (larger businesses and organizations) it is much more likely that those types of businesses are using windows than macs.

I say great job google, this is so important to help bridge the gap that people feel so uncomfortable about working within google apps instead of their traditional non-cloud applications. This will get them more comfortable with the concept, and they may occasionally need to go to google docs to get to a file when they are not in front of ms office. This is a much easier transition for people. Keep up the great work!

While google should have worked this mac issue out, it would still be smarter is mac people gave up their over priced pieces of metal and left the steve jobs cult and re-joined the human race.

How can you respect and give money to a company that over charges, bad mouths and ruins anyone/company that makes mac compatible devices and is so hateful, they won't even let you play 75% of the videos out their on the web because they are cry babies and won't work with Adobe.

steve jobs doesn't believe in bettering the world, only bettering his pocketbook. Without him, apple will suffer the long overdue collapse they avoided by introducing the ipod and locking your music up so you are stuck with their products.

If you like shiny things, I have this newly painted bridge I can sell you, make me your best offer, it's available right now for any cash buyer ;)

What about supporting the same features in OpenOffice? We refused MS licenses on computers that didn't come with them. Also, no Mac support = no use to most CEOs.

It's a shame that the document cannot be edited simultaneously on google docs. Once the document is converted it looses the sharing function with MS Office.
For those that depend solely on editing on the cloud (google docs) will have to purchase a MS Office version.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the plug in and the hole idea, because there are people there that can not live without MS Office or find far to complicated to use a different Office suite, and also because there are so many functions on MS Office suite that is not available on Google Docs, say Text Direction, that can be used collaboratively.
    Great stuff!!!!!

Please make the toolbar (a) more subtle or (b) optional. I understand you feel the need to yell how great the solution is, but after a while it's just taking up space I'd rather fill with my document.

    Great work, though. Kudos.

To be fair, sharepoint support on the mac was nonexistent last time I tried, and don't even think about using it on any browser other than IE. Trying to use Openoffice with Linux to read and write .docx or pptx files is even more hit and miss. With this you can run office 2007 or even 2010 in a virtualbox windows 2003 VM on the mac or linux and collaborate. This works well from linux, on the mac the mixup of copy/paste keys always causes confusion.

I'm the IT manager of a small company in Argentina and we have a Google Apps Premier domain since March 2009. The Cloud Connect it's what we've been looking for since then.

I have to add two ideas for Cloud Connect to implement:
    1) Cloud Connect support for OpenOffice because many enterprises in third world countries, like us, migrate to OpenOffice because of licences costs
    2) Add the possibility to select a Google Docs collection to store the Microsoft Office file. This will avoid to set the share of each Microsoft Office file if the collection has the share set, so the file will inherit

Mac is used only by 2 percent of world wide business and serious student community (yeah this is not a slur on people using Mac) so obviously PC gains importance over Mac.

Until and unless Microsoft supports open APIs on Microsoft Office for Mac, Google Cloud Connect will have a limited user base in the education sector.

I tried it out but I really don't like the bar it adds to my Office 2010. It could just stay in the backstage like the rest of the save options or have a tab in the ribbon but no extra bar on my screen thank you. :-)

Or at least it could have a Show/Hide Cloud Connect bar option.

I'm with David (feb 25). It's cool that it's there but I really want to hide it 90% of the time and only open when I want to sync. And with the auto-sync option there's even no need to show the toolbar. So please provide option to hide it.

    Good stuff, Google.
    To the naysayers:-
Google can't connect to macs because they (Apple and MS products for Mac) don't have open APIs. Google can only connect to what's available; if it's not available on the platform, then they can't connect. If you're such a Mac fan, use iWork online (great for collaborating with fellow Mac users, useless for non-Mac users).

Linux/OpenOffice users: I daresay there's a version in the works, but Google are naturally targeting the mass market initially. Also, if you're using OpenOffice/Linux, you're probably fairly comfortable with technology, and may even already use OpenOffice's Google Docs connector.

This thing is great, and very powerful. I cant believe google released it without support for everything everybody uses in the world on day one. The nerve of them. (ok can you detect the sarcasm) . For petes sake this is a first release of a very cool tool. And, the MAC api for office does not have support for a lot of things, so i suspect its really something google cant control. Nice work.

I think this is a good start. I am using Offisync and the free version does pretty decent job for me in most cases. Features I would like to see in Cloud Connect (before moving to Cloud Connect) would be to browse my files from Microsoft Office / OpenOffice directly. In other words, creating / deleting / moving my files and folders in Google Docs directly from within Microsoft Office. Also document search capability of Google Docs directly from Microsoft/Open Office would be awesome.

I understand that Google does not want to create a competing product of one of their partners but need to step up the game. Also need to have a connection with OpenOffice.

Why my docs have stopped synchronising? On Google Docs I can see multiple versions of each document but all are stand alone versions. None is updated/merged with latest revisions. Why? When I try to use sync button from MS Excel or MS Word, I get same version that is already there on my PC? Why? It does not get updated with revisions done by other collaborators. Why???
